Narendra Modi’s BJP government has been targeting opposition parties in India and misusing federal agencies to frame orchestrated charges and book them under draconian laws. The most recent raid on the home of communist Pinarayi Vijayan has been described by MA Baby, a leader in the Communist Party of India (Marxist), as “ a politically motivated act of vendetta” and a witch hunt.

Protests broke out across India on Wednesday, May 27, following raid at the home of Keralan CPI(M) leader Vijayan.
The raid was carried out by a federal agency in relation to a case against Vijayan’s daughter which is widely believed to be baseless and politically motivated.
Vijayan’s house was raided supposedly in connection with an old case related to financial dealings between a now-defunct firm owned by his daughter and another company between 2017 and 2021.
Hundreds of people surrounded Vijayan’s house in the city protesting the raid. They shouted slogans against alleged misuse of security forces and federal agencies to intimidate and threaten communists.
The mass protest in the national capital, Delhi, was led by CPI (M) general secretary M A Baby and other national leaders.
Security forces arrested Baby and other leaders, releasing them hours later.
Eight other people were arrested in Kerala over allegations of violence against the state officials conducting the raid at Vijayan’s house.
Brinda Karat, senior CPI (M) leader claimed that the charges against Vijayan are “bogus” and the raids were conducted to intimidate the CPI (M).
However, “we are not the people to be intimidated, we are not people to be bullied, we do not care what ED does, the people of Kerala will give a fitting reply” to what is done to Vijayan.
The Workers Party extends its support to the CPI(M) in the wake of these events.
